The GSD (German Shepherd Dog) Snow Sniffer

So, yesterday my german shepherd dog, Zeus, wanted to go outside.  I thought he needed to go potty, but instead, he just went to the corner of the yard and sat down, then started sniffing the air.  It seemed odd to me because he usually only does that when a neighbor is grilling out, but considering the temperature, I found that unlikely.  The only thing I could think of was he was already smelling the snow that was supposed to (and did) come later that evening.

Zeus sniffing the expected snow.

There is he is.  On January 12th, sniffing the snow in the air.  Handsome puppy, isn’t he?  😉

And guess what??!!!?  He was RIGHT!!!  This is January 13th!  LOL  We got between 5 to 6 inches of pure white snow.  Although it doesn’t look so pure now.  It looks like he’s saying, “See?  I TOLD you, Mom!”  😉  Whenever it snows, he always comes inside with a snowy snout!  He loves getting down in there and rooting around!  He’s my big silly boy!  Five years old, but still a puppy at heart!

Isn’t it funny how animals just KNOW things??  They seem to be psychic, don’t they?  It just amazes me.  Do you have pets that tell you things that are going to happen?  I’d love to hear about it!  Please leave your story in the comments!

How to Clear Your Sinuses Naturally

woman sneeze allergy allergies neti pot

Do you ever suffer from allergies or a stuffy nose?  I sure do.  Be it pollen filling the air outside, or various indoor allergens, like dust, pet dander, mildew, etc, I have it all.  And it sure can cause problems with my sinuses!  Lately, I’ve been having a stuffed up nose all the time, and finally, I got sick of it, and pulled out my Neti Pot.

A Neti Pot is a device (usually a ceramic vessel) that allows you to pour a safe, natural saline (salt) solution into your nasal cavity.  The solution goes in one nostril, through your sinuses, and back out the other nostril or your mouth.  This loosens and washes out any mucous or other yuckies to be cleansed from your sinuses.  It’s really a very simple process, and I always feel lighter in my sinus area after using it!

It can be a little tricky to use at first, and some people are hesitant to try it, but It’s really not that bad.  Here is a video showing how it’s done!

There are a couple main types of Neti Pot.  The first is the kind you see in the video.  Very simple and easy to use, but sometimes a little off-putting.  The second is not really called a Neti Pot, but it serves the same purpose and makes it a little easier for people who just can’t handle the water draining back out.  This is an electric style nasal irrigator that pumps the solution into one nostril, then sucks it back out of the other with a gentle suction feature.  A very popular brand of that is called Navage I haven’t actually tried this, but other people seem to like it!

If you’ve had problems like this, please share your experience in the comments!  Have you tried nasal cleansing with a Neti Pot or some other technique?  I’d love to hear what worked or didn’t work.

My Home Town in Gilmer County WV

This video was made by On The Road In West Virginia on Facebook.  It is a small history of Gilmer county, which is where I grew up!  I lived about 1 mile from Glenville, which is the county seat.  I hope you enjoy this video, and go visit On The Road in West Virginia and watch all their videos!

Glenville is one of those “one horse towns” you hear about.  When I lived there, it had 1 stoplight.  At that time, I thought it was hokey and couldn’t understand what the appeal was, but I do now.  It’s small and tightly knit.  People are friendly and help each other.  It’s relatively safe and quiet.

I used to go back home several times a year, but since my mother sold the house and moved in with my sister, I no longer have a place to go.  I do miss it very much.  Although, I have occasionally made it back for the WV State Folk Festival.  I do miss my dad being there, though.  He was a permanent fixture during most of them until he passed away.  He and his brothers had played bluegrass music there, and many other places for years, and he still had jam sessions with lots of folks outside his camper even up in his last years.  I would love, someday, to be able to live back home again!

My Favorite Cute Spooky Halloween Videos

Ever since I can remember, I have loved Halloween!  My Mom always made me a beautiful costume!  I was always a princess, but I didn’t mind.  I loved seeing all the other kids dressed up in wonderful Five and Dime store or handmade costumes!  And the kooky decorations were a delight!  If things were MY way, we’d have Halloween all year long.

These days there is a plethora of costumes, decorations, home decor, and movies and shows to watch.  Even the Etsy squad has got in on the fun with clothing, jewelry, toys, and decor to fit any taste with their homemade wonders!

But besides scanning through the many Pins on Pinterest full of wonderful, inspirational ideas, one of my favorite things I do to bring back that whimsical Halloween feeling I love is watching old shows and movies!  You can’t always find time online, but here are a few that give me some spooktacular goosebumps of delight!

38 Things I’ve Found in a Tractor Trailer

truck-2663163_640

My husband and I detail the interiors of tractor trailers when one driver leaves, so they will be clean for the next driver.  We started doing this for the company he drives for several years ago, and we’ve seen some crazy things in them!  Some of them have been funny, but there have also been some really gross finds, as well.

Now, I have to say that not ALL trucks are bad, but the majority of trucks we’ve cleaned have been filthy.  FILTHY!  I mean, c’mon guys.  At least think of your health.  Some of them I wouldn’t even touch without my rubber gloves on.

So, here we go!  The list of things we’ve found, in no particular order.

  1. Dirt- a general layer of crud on the floors, seats, walls, dashboard, and ceiling.
  2. Cigarette tar- it runs down from the walls and ceiling when we spray cleaner on them.
  3. Coffee- no, not cups of coffee, but spills in the cup holders, on the dash, the floor, the seats, and yes, the ceiling.
  4. Lime dust- because this company hauls lime and lime slurry to various plants.
  5. BO- ok, we can’t actually SEE it, but we can smell it.  Eww!!
  6. Coins
  7. Candy/Food wrappers
  8. Earplugs- because some machinery is loud.
  9. Dirty magazines- because… well… They’re guys.
  10. Dog food- some drivers take their dogs with them.
  11. Pudding cups-  Oh my gosh!!!  This was one of the worst trucks!  I actually found a large package of smushed and leaking pudding cups…. Get this.  Under the MATTRESS!!!  I’m so not kidding.  Gross!!
  12. Dog fur
  13. Dog Poo- Yes, that was our most recent find.  Petrified dog poo, again, under the mattress.  How does that even HAPPEN???  Driver, you should be ashamed of yourself.
  14. Towels and sheets
  15. Clothes
  16. Earrings
  17. General trash
  18. Dog pee pad- in the same truck with the poo.
  19. Fleas- cause…. dogs.
  20. Mold- yes.  Mold.  How we haven’t gotten some disease is beyond me.
  21. Mushrooms-  That’s right.  Actual mushrooms growing in the corner behind the mattress.  Yeah.  Again.  How does that happen?
  22. Glasses-  I guess they couldn’t stand to look at it anymore.
  23. Various electronics- GPS’s, cords, etc.
  24. Bras and Panties-  Again.  They’re guys.
  25. Used condom wrappers- See above.  At least that’s ALL we’ve found.
  26. Unused tampons
  27. Music CD’s
  28. Screws and Screwdrivers-  I don’t know…
  29. Paper Clips
  30. Pens
  31. Shoes and Boots
  32. Keys
  33. Shampoo, Deodorant, etc
  34. Paper towels
  35. Cleaning products- Barely used, apparently.
  36. Medicine
  37. Bowl for smoking weed
  38. Cigarette butts

dog-155983_640
That’s all I could think of, but there is probably some things I missed.  I’d have to say that the dog poo, mushrooms, and pudding cups top my list of Most Disgusting.  What do you think?  Have you ever found anything weird in a big truck?

Dr. Seuss for President!

Yes!  I wish Dr. Seuss could come back and be President!  Oh, the places we’d go!

Ever since I was very little, one of my very favorite authors has been Dr. Seuss!  Yes, even as an adult!  Not only was he whimsical and imaginative, but he was very smart and a good person.  He lived through racism, commercialism, and all sorts of other “isms”, and saw the damage that they could do.  In his art and books, he tried to teach children (although, many adults could take a lesson) tolerance and care for people and this world we live in.  I truly believe that the world would be a much better place if people read his books and tried to think like him every day!

So, now, I’d like to share a few of my favorite videos of his stories!  This first one isn’t a book, though.  It’s a biography made for kids in a style befitting Dr. Seuss himself!  I hope you enjoy these.  Please let me know what YOUR favorite is in the comments!
